6 must-have accessories for your JoJo tank

Most JoJo tanks come with the basic parts, but there are also various accessories which you can buy depending on what you plan to use the tank for.

Nickel and solid brass taps require a 40/20 reducer. Dezincification-resistant (DZR) brass taps are specifically designed for drinking water use.

1. Water tank stand

If you require your tank to be elevated you can buy a steel stand, otherwise a concrete base will suffice.

2. Taps

There are three main types of taps: plastic, nickel and solid brass (lockable). Nickel and solid brass taps require a 40/20 reducer. Dezincification-resistant (DZR) brass taps are specifically designed for drinking water use.

3. Tank fittings

Use the various connectors, lids, reducers, screens and plugs to customise your tank according to your uses.

Most JoJo tanks come standard with a lid and fittings, but a vent cap is a smart addition as it allows the collected water to ‘breathe' and become oxygenated. You may also want to fit a tank gauge to let you know how much water is inside.

Various pipe couplings are available too. These allow you to connect pipes together and customise your setup.

Use a solenoid valve to regulate the back-up water supply and refill the tank, or a hydraulic back-up valve which will switch to an alternate water supply when one is interrupted.

4. Piping and gutters

There are certain pipes and gutters which improve the quality of water collected.

Marley Vynadeep is a white PVC gutter with a smooth finish. As a result, it is corrosion-resistant and allows for excellent flow rates.

Marley's Streamline Double-Flo gutters offer the same benefits, but have a square profile.

5. Pre-filters

These increase the quality of water collected. A JoJo First Flush Diverter removes the debris that's normally present in the water following the first rains of the season. This is important for all rainwater harvesting to prevent unnecessary maintenance and sludge formation.

The JoJo Leaf Eater deflects leaves and debris away before it even enters the inlet screen of the tank. It reduces organic sediment, increasing the quality of water. This, too, is recommended for all rainwater harvesting.

A UV disinfection system is best for those using water for drinking. It uses ultraviolet technology to remove certain waterborne contaminants without affecting taste, smell or colour. It's also energy efficient and has no chemical by-products.

6. Pumps

There are two main types of pumps: submersible pressure pumps and booster pumps.

Pumps are able to maintain the correct pressure in the tanks, especially if they are connected to more than one tap.

Pumps can also automatically switch to your mains supply when the tank levels are too low when you're using the water for laundry or toilets. You can buy full kits with all the necessary parts to connect to water tanks.

Electric press pumps are available at varying power outputs: 0.37 kw, 0.75 kw, 0.55 kw (stainless steel) and 0.75 kw (stainless steel). For an energy-efficient option, submersible solar pumps with 27m depth or 54m depth are available.
